Daily Recommendations for added sugar:
*Men get 9 tsp or 36 grams of added sugar per day
*Women get 6 tsp or 25 grams of added sugar per day
Why is too much Sugar bad for our bodies:
excess sugar turns to fat in the body which of course will clog the arteries over time
causes inflammation to the joints and tissue in the body including the brain!
can "clog" the insulin receptors over time making your body no longer able to process the excess amount of sugar you have been giving it, causing type 2 diabetes
Artificial Sweeteners or should I say Artificial Crap
Why are Artificial sweeteners bad for you:
Once your body metabolizes an artificial sweetener it sends a signal back up to your brain saying "hey that wasn't real sugar, I want more!" Making your body crave and become addicted to their product. Think of the classic diet coke, if you know someone who drinks diet coke they don't drink just one... Another win for the food industry
Made up of sticky substance that sticks the the visceral fat layer around the stomach making it extremely hard to lose abdominal fat. Also sticks to the liver, causing fatty liver.
We have also found links to increased Alzheimer's and Dementia with consuming these sweeteners
Eats away at your intestinal lining from the inside out causing gas bloating and diarrhea in the general population. Those suffering from stomach issues such as, IBS or any inflammatory stomach issues, it's extremely important to keep these sweeteners out of your diet as they will cause GI distress.
Some of the names you will see: erythriol, allulose, hydrogentated starch hydrolysate, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol, tagatose, xylitol, monk fruit extract, acesulfame potassium, aspartame, saccharin and sucralose.
- Who can pronounce these names? Ridiculous right, they are just a bunch of man made chemicals that we want to keep out of our bodies. I tell my patients when in doubt if you look at an ingredient list and you can't pronounce half the words on the list, put it back!!
* The New popular artificial sweetener we are seeing used more in the food industry is Chicory Root or inulin, as of now chicory root does not have to be labeled as an artificial sweetener. It is labeled as a fiber but still metabolizes in the body the same way as an artificial sweetener does. Another way for the food industry tries to fool us and sneak in more unhealthy crap in our products.
INGREDIENTS: CULTURED GRADE A NON FAT MILK, WATER, CHICORY ROOT FIBER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 1% OF STEVIA LEAF EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVORS, VEGETABLE JUICE CONCENTRATE (FOR COLOR), LEMON JUICE CONCENTRATE, SEA SALT, VITAMIN D3.
When in doubt if something is labeled with "zero-added sugar", "zero-artificial sweeteners" but still tastes sweet, then there is something in it, put it back!
Another Catch: These Unsafe sweeteners don't show up only in foods or drinks labeled "sugar-free," "light," or "diet. " You have to check each ingredient list. I have found added sweeteners in breads and cereals, coffees and creamers, drinks and mixes and snack foods.
Bottom Line: When in doubt use the real thing; honey or pure maple syrup, just know that 1 tsp= 4.5 grams of added sugar and count it towards your daily limit of added sugar.
